Pallet Builder & Repair

Hours of Work:  40 hours per week.

Source of Supervision:  Reports to Lead Hand and/or Shop Supervisor

Primary Function:   Uses automated equipment to build and assemble new pallets.  Repairs pre-manufactured pallets for re-use and re-sale.

Tasks:

New Pallets:

  • Identifies potential hazards before the shift begins.
  • Understands scope of work at the start of each shift as well as production target.
  • Ability to read custom orders and understand the design of the pallet.
  • Uses pallet binding machine to stack pallet orders
  • Assembles wood and wood products and stacks them for temporary storage.
  • Operates machinery often hydraulic; electric and pneumatic required for assembly.
  • Uses bander machine to package and stack orders.
  • Identifies common wood species. ie: Spruce, Pine & Fir
  • Grades lumber according to standards.  Perform quality checks on materials before and after final assembly.
  • Accurately records output against input at the start of the shift.
  • Given production schedule, Pallet Builders may be assigned to Assembler work tasks.

Repair of Pre-Manufactured Pallets:

  • Repair pallets by hand while using hand tools such as pneumatic nail guns, pry bars, hammers and reciprocating saws to reconstruct pallets.
  • Looks out for possible obstacles.  Brings more experienced colleagues to resolve problems with equipment and/or materials.
  • Works independently or with a two or three person team.
  • Ability to use work methods and techniques that ensure the product meets quality standards.
  • Ability to use work methods that avoid waste.
  • At the end of shift, implements good housekeeping practices to clear work area for next shift.
  • Communicates progress and final product to the next shift lead.

Skills:

  • Skilled at operating and understanding the safety features of equipment.
  • Visually observe the natural characteristics of the wood and grades wood according to standards.
  • Understands safe work procedures and adheres to safety policies.
  • Must have the drive to learn and drive to meet standards set.
  • Ability to stand for 6 to 8 hours on a given work site.
  • Physical height of 5’6” when operating automated pallet equipment.
  • Respectful communicator.
  • Working knowledge of Mayfair’s Safety Manual and Safe Work Practices.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Exposure dust.
  • Busy, high-volume environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours when overtime is occasionally required.
